Thoughts on PhotoShop

In short: I've been on Creative Cloud since it came out and I love it.

And $9.99 a month is the standard rate, just so you know... Get it from B&H, get it straight from Adobe, it's still $10 a month.

...

It looked to me like PhotoShop was $9.95 by itself from Adobe and this includes both Lightroom and PhotoShop at B&H

Update..... I see where it includes both!

It's Adobe's Photographers Bundle or Package or whatever they call it, I forget. But yeah, it's PS it's LR it's $10 a month. You can always download a free trial and see what you think. And for that matter, if you don't like your Creative Cloud subscription after a few months or whatever, you can always cancel and get a pro-rated refund.

If I use Lightroom to place them in categories or files and no longer have access to them by subscription how will I find them?
Your exported edited files are saved anywhere you like so are your NEF's so long as its set up before hand. My NEF's get imported to an external drive on my NAS where LR sees them. My JPEGS get exported to either edited for internet or edited or website on my NAS.

From adobe website in answer to the faq 'what happens to my photos if I end my membership':

"You'll still have access to all your photos on your local hard drive on your computer through Lightroom for the desktop. You can continue to import and organize photos as well as output your edited photos through export, Publish, Print, Web, or Slideshow. Access to the Develop & Map modules as well as Lightroom for mobile will no longer be available after your membership ends."

So you will retain limited use of Lightroom after cancellation and of course if you store your files locally, they will always be there even if you deleted Lightroom. You would want to export them before deleting Lightroom to preserve your edits.

I have a 27inch Imac and use parallels to be able to run my CS5 that I purchased 3 or 4 years ago. I'm trying to decide if I just want to do away with having windows on my Mac and just subscribe to PhotoShop. The only thing I use windows for is CS5. I would like to get my pictures out of IPhoto and organize them with Lightroom but I just don't want to be stuck if I cancel my subscription. I not trying to drive you nuts asking questions but I want to have it clear in my mind that this is what I want to do. Thanks for helping me with my decision.

Grandpaw, something else that helped ME decide to subscribe is you get 2 installations of each program. So I run LR and PS on my PC at home and on my MacBook when I travel. It's convenient to have two installations. I guess with the CD based software you could install it more than once but I'm not sure how that licensing works. Regardless, if you thought the subscription based software was one install only... fear no more. ;)

iPhoto has a way of hijacking your pics doesn't it? ;)

I'll just toss out a few thought's here because I think we can all sympathize with your situation; photo organization can be tricky and switching organizational gears can be a serious headache. Without taking anything away from Lightroom, the cataloging it does is one of the biggest reasons I don't use it. I set up my own organizational system that is totally independent of the software I use.

Shots go into into a folder that has a descriptive title (e.g. "Bob's Birthday Party") and the month and year those shot were taken (e.g. February 2014). Inside that folder each shot is renamed with the same general information and sequence number (e.g. Bob's Birthday Party - February 2014 (5), Bob's Birthday Party - February 2014 (6) etc.). Easy peasy and totally independent of any software to keep things organized. Adobe Bridge, which comes part and parcel with the Adobe Photography plan, has tools for tagging, rating, filtering and so forth but does not take control of your images like Lightroom does. There's no importing, no exporting and no catalog to deal with. And if Adobe Bridge were to go away, my organizational structure remains in tact. I may lose some conveniences but that would be the extent of the damage.

Of course moving away from Lightroom means learning Photoshop but if you're competent with Lightroom, learning Photoshop won't be difficult. Learning Photoshop if you're NOT competent with Lightroom would not be difficult but Photoshop has been stigmatized as being difficult to learn when in truth, it's not. It's just not. Learning everything there is to know about Photoshop would be hard, on that point I agree, but we don't need to do that; we only need to know a tiny sliver of what it can do.

Don't know if anything I've said helps, but there ya go.

I've also had the plan since they came out with it. I just have my CC billed each month and if I wanted to unsubscribe just stop payment to that card.
Lightroom is a cataloging program, it will place the photos where you want them. The changes are also in files. Personally I prefer to use Bridge and Photoshop for photo manipulation and I just use the windows file/folder system to track them. Stick the card in the pc, Bridge will rename the files and create a folder and move the originals into the folder. I can copy the folder with one command to an external drive and work on the folder copies.
I don't use Lightroom but it's there to play with and use if I change my mind.
Heck, it's 10 bucks. Spend that at Club MC for lunch.............
I'm retired now so only do some land pics and dog show stuff. Don't have to deal with 500 weddings shots at one go.
It also updates my copy of CS6 when it does updates.
