I took these a while back with a Canon 3d Mark ii
I have just purchased a D5100 and would like to take more like this with blurred background ext.
So the question is.. do I need a macro, telephoto or something totally different....
Suggestions on lens' are welcome
Thanks in advance!!

Hi - I think for the 1st picture - you may need a fast 85mm as it gives somewhat a compressed view.
The other two could do with a fast, say f2 or less, 50mm standard lens.
A macro would also do for type of picture like pic 2 and 3, but it depends upon how close you want to get to your subject and in your case example it seems 50mm fast std will give you the same.

For a goal of reduced depth of field, the main thing is that you want to use a wide aperture to give reduced depth of field, with any lens.

I used the same camera and lens for all photos here, I have just taken a look at some f2 lenses and they seem way out of my price range for a beginner so i'll just play around with the stock lens a little more for now!

I do not own any Sigma lenses but I reckon they are fine. You could try them out at your local dealers and also check out the Nikkor 50 f/1.8 - which I have read at many reviews to be a wonderful standard lens.
Here is a couple of pictures I took with a Nikkor 35mm f/2D with a D800E and it looks great with aperture wide open.

Sigma lenses seem decently priced do they just shoot a lot poorer quality of image?

Some Sigma's are good, some are great, and others not so good. It all depends on which lens we are talking about.
