The important thing with the D3xxx & D5xxx cameras is making sure that the lens has an in-built focus motor, as your camera body doesn't have this.

For Nikkor lenses, these are AF-S
Sigma these are HSM
and Tamron uses USD

Make sure the lens has the USD designation, or you will only be able to focus manually.

It looks like Tamron have both USD and non-USD versions, so take care.

I was lucky to pick a new one up on ebay 2 days ago for $292 Australian delivered when there was a 15% sale on. When it arrives I will try it out on an old D3000 I have. If it works on the D3000 it will work on the D3100. I will let you know.
