Tamron 18-270mm ?

I got this lens back when I got my d3100. I was happy with it then, but I was mostly taking snaps of my kid at school activities. It worked for me and I wasn't the dad with the big huge camera. At the time I really wasn't working on getting the best shots I could. As my interest turned to birds and other animals, I found this lens on the soft side and struggled for the sharpness I wanted. My next step forward was the 18-105 and the Tamron SP 70-300. Both lenses gave me sharper shots more easily. I haven't really tried the 18-270 on my d7200.
I found this review to be accurate:

Another point mentioned in the review.... At close focus range, you don't get 270mm, more like 200mm. Focus breathing, I think this is called.

I have it and it is awful. But it articulates into a tiny package and it is a good hiking lens.

Find a Nikon 70-300VRG and maybe a 24-85vrg. These will meet your needs and can be found pretty cheap on ebay. If you had a D7100 (in body focus motor) and wanted to go really cheap then a 70-210 and 28-85 would be good choices but neither of these will work on the camera you currently have.

Why would these lenses work on a D7100 but not on a D7200?
