Most of the users buy 500/600mm zooms for the 500/600 end, and that is where it is normally soft. In my experience a 300mm F4 prime is a better acquisition. With TC 1.4 its is a stellar 420mm F5.6 lense and with a TC1.7 an OK 510mm lense, but the IQ will still be better than the zooms at the long end.Lot of times it is better to shoot with a sharp lense at a lower focal length rather than with a soft lense at a longer focal length. With my D3300 I have matched the 55mm end of the kit lense and the 35mm prime and the prime image is much better when compared to the zoom at the same image size. That is what the D7100's 1.3 crop mode is all about.</blockquote>
