Thats the way i have been doing it,just thought i would give this a second try must admit i will take the trials a bit further.

It would seem that as the sun goes down, ISO 500 will have to drop your shutter speed down too much for a decent handheld shot.

In any case I can see I have some testing to do and discover what works best for me.

I appreciate the input.

As with most lenses, when the sun goes down the tripod comes out. I find that just about all of my use of longer lenses are during the daytime. I just don't seem to have much luck finding birds and other subjects that require a longer lens and faster shutter speeds when the light goes down.

Even under perfect conditions my results are not perfect...

In what way are you unhappy with the less than perfect results?

I shoot always at 100 ISO and do the rest in post but for birds in flight, the light is not always generous.
