It would seem that as the sun goes down, ISO 500 will have to drop your shutter speed down too much for a decent handheld shot.

In any case I can see I have some testing to do and discover what works best for me.

I appreciate the input.

As with most lenses, when the sun goes down the tripod comes out. I find that just about all of my use of longer lenses are during the daytime. I just don't seem to have much luck finding birds and other subjects that require a longer lens and faster shutter speeds when the light goes down.
