Another free option is Darktable it works on Windows and Macs and lots of open source Unix based systems.
I tried it recently and was surprised with what it can do.

I have Darktable and I do like that it is cross-platform compatible. Another program to look at is AfterShot Pro from Corel. It, too, is cross-platform compatible. For me, being able to use the same program in OS X and Ubuntu Linux, is important. I also use ViewNX2 for quick editing.

You have a lot of options out there. Start with ViewNX2. Then, if it is not robust enough for you, start looking for something with more features.
