I am 63, and over the years I have seen arthritis, gout and other ailments cripple people. My mother had it, so did my father in law. One thing I learnt is that ALL anti-inflammatory and all pain relievers have major side effects. The most common being kidney damage. That is why I never take any of these medicines. What I have learnt from alternative medicine practitioners (mostly Sadhus, Homeopaths and Local medicine practitioners) is that majority of the joint inflammations/pain are caused by excessive uric acid, and in extremely rare cases by degeneration of the joints. For the latter you can do nothing but pray and take a lot of calcium in form of milk and cheese and hope to arrest further problems. For the former you have a simple cure. Here are some that I use, in the order of difficulty (to me) . Reduce the amount of protein, especially beans. Reduce meat intake. I find that there is no difference between red and white meat. . When ever you take a lot of meat, have aplenty of acidic sauce. I have no idea why it works, but every cuisine has acidic sauce in some form or other accompanying meat. . Drink a lot of water, any where between 2 and 5 liters a day. I find taking 1/2 to 1/4 peg of whiskey (50ml is full peg), in a glass of water helps. If you drink 2 pegs; normal consumption here; then split it up into 4 to 8 drinks instead of one large drink. . Lastly try meditation and auto suggestion. Every time my joints start paining after a bout of indulgence; in spite of the above precautions; I suggest to myself that uric acid should come down and kidneys step up their job. Works every time, but it took quite a long time to reach this stage. (You can reduce blood sugar, uric acid, cholesterol, blood pressure and a host of other body functions this way).
