Sticky Focus 50mm 1.8D???

I just got a 50mm AF 1.8D, and when I turn the focus ring fast, it's smooth, but when I turn it slowly, it "jerks"s in small incriminates. Basically if I turn it slowly with one finger, it only turns in increments of ~4mm. It's like it isnt greased enough or something. But if I squeeze the ring it's smoother. Maybe it's warped? I'm guessing it should turn very smoothy like all my other lenses? Camera's switched on manual. Is there a problem and could it ruin my camera focus motor in AFS (D7000)? Should probably just ship it back... :(

If this happens when the lens is mounted on the D7000, you have to make sure that the focus switch on the camera is set to manual. Otherwise, when manually turning the focus on the lens, you are forcing the in-camera focus motor to turn as well. This is the major difference between D and G lenses. With the G, you can manually focus with the lens without damage to the camera's focusing motor since there is no focus screw coupling lens and body.

Hope this helps.

if he meant D and not AF-D then it has no focus provision except manual and in my experience the grease on the focus threads has gone off ...lumpy etc.

he should respond, because it sounds like he is talking about the 50mm AF 1.8D, it should not feel lumpy,, no,, it is not an ultra smooth focus,, since you are talking about a 120 dollar lens, but,, it should not feel lumpy,, I doupt if it would hurt your camera, but if you are stressed, return it for another, or send it to Nikkor for repair (assuming you have a warranty).

New lens or eBay bargain?

New from Bestbuy. I called about returns and they said I have 30 days. Not going to bother with RMA then. So I'll just return it in store. Now to decide whether to exchange it for the D or the G. haha ><

If you can afford it, you might as well get the G… Apparently the out of focus is mucho better looking...

The 50mm f/1.8G is a beautiful lens indeed. Never tried other variants of the 50mm, so I can only give you my biased opinion :)

The 50G is a terrific lens, and one that you won't have to trade off if and when you move to a full sensor camera. And that will, in fact, make it VERY good to you.
