Stealing tips

Last night we stayed in Bishop CA on our way to Yosemite. We went to a Denny's for something to eat. In the US and several European countries , unlike the UK it is common to leave cash tips on the table or bar. In the UK you normally hand over cash or add it to the bill.

So when I got up to pay at the desk I left some dollars on the table for the young man who had been serving us. While I was paying three young guys came in and sat at our table. I noticed one sliding the money around until it slid into his pocket. Now I'm no fighter or trouble maker but my short fuse kicked in at this point, foreign visitor or not. The end result was the money back with the waiter and a guy having to eat his meal in a restaurant with everyone around including the staff knowing that he steals tips. I hope he really enjoyed that experience.

I assume his behaviour would be frowned upon by normal decent people.

Thanks for getting the tip to the waiter, for one, and THANKS for making sure the whole restaurant knew! That's just the icing on the cake! I'm surprised the employees didn't ask the young men to eat elsewhere, which would have been amazingly rewarding as well.

I normally put my tip on the bill when I pay but I always wonder if it goes to my waitress/waiter. I have heard that sometimes the tips are divided equally among all the staff and not the one who waited on me. I tip based on service. Really bad service my not get anything or just a very small tip just so they know i just did not forget. Decent base service gets 15%. If my tea glass does not get empty during the entire meal they get 18%. If the waitress flirts with me and gives great service it goes to 20%. Once in a while I will go 25% but the meal and service has to be above and beyond.

Nicely done. Were I the restaurant manager they would have been given the choice of menus handed to them by a police officer or the opportunity to walk away and eat elsewhere. "Petty" theft is still theft.

In India we keep the tip in the bill folder.

My cousin who spent his life in Canada, always makes it a point to hand the tip to the waiter who served him. When I asked him why, he said it gives the tips a personal touch. Now I know what other reasons are there.

In Serbia, not only that these scumbags would have to eat elsewhere - they would probably got their teeth kicked out of their mouth, so it is questionable whether they would be ABLE to eat (elsewhere)...

Yosemite was beautiful, but of all the places we went, rather too busy. I bet it's great in the winter.

Water was flowing but probably a month after the peak.

It seems that a generation or two ago, more people knew what was wrong and right and made decisions accordingly. These days an increasing number of people make their decisions based on what they can get away with.
