There certainly is that feeling of " we dont wanna be like the US " with its gun laws, but we already are and have been for many years, but not from the honest citizen point of view. But the way i see it, and again i say i have no love of the gun, is that at least the honest joe public can level the game to a good degree. Whether you never have to whip out your conceal or carry is not the issue. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it ? Yeah some ( many ) may never see a situation on their entire lives that warrants having a gun. Also i agree that it shouldnt be an easy thing to own one. Psych tests would be good, criminal history check, etc. for gun ownership. The trouble is, like having a gun amnesty where only honest unlicenced gun owners ever hand them in ( its happened here ) is a bit of a mockery. The deranged gang owning, drug dealing pimps and all, simply dont give a hoot about the law. Gun amnesty ? I'd be surprised if they could even spell it. So the illegal gun owning community over here is made up of all those that shouldnt have access to them. The UK Gov. is so against the public owning guns for defence for many reasons, but one of them is that they reckon burglars would start to arm themselves when breaking into peoples homes. So what ? At least the game would be on an equal footing . Burglars here have pretty much a free reign, becuase they know the public aren't likely to be armed, but they still carry weapons ( an action that seems to pass the law makers by ) just in case they happen to surpise a house owner ! Now if that same burglar thought that he might get his melon blown off, he may think twice in the future, about whether this way of making a living is really worth it. They dont like the game being fought on a level footing PS burglars here, even long term burglars, get rediculously low jail sentences
