after using the rocker air blower on the switch while moving it on and off it started to work but then after a while the camera came on while in the off position ..not sure if it's a humidity problem or sand got in . I am really careful with the camera at the beach while here in Mexico as the sand is very fine . I keep my camera in a plastic bag in my back pack when i'm not using it so i'm ruling out sand . The previous year I had 2 lenses go wonkers on me here in Mexico and had to replace them . In the future I will be taking my back up d7100 to Mexico . or my pentax D5 as it is sealed against sand and moisture ,

Sorry to hear about all your issues. Not sure I would recommend storing in a plastic bag without some kind of moisture absorbing material like https://www.amazon.com/s?k=40+gram+...6bfdb7ae5bc6d1f30e9e88d9e4e3436d7bfb941a95d0a .
I have similar in my camera bags. Both the D7100 and and D500 are weather sealed but this doesn't eliminate moisture from getting in and not all lenses are weather sealed.
Have you backed up your image files from your camera so you can do some trouble shooting?

hi ...I only kept it in plastic while I was at the beach to prevent sand getting in ...i am not sure message files will show anything but i'll check ...I had the battery out for several hours today and when I put the battery in it was off but within 10 secs it came on again ...it's that finicky ! thanks Derek

A frustrating problem! I have 3 D500s, but since I haven’t had this problem I don’t have a guess as to the cause. If I were you, I think I’d just send it off to Nikon for repair.

Was suggesting that you use a different card for your trouble shooting other than the one containing your images or back them up to a safe space. It may indeed be time to seek professional help.

I just returned to Canada and the issue with the shutter staying on after shutting it off is no longer an issue . It resolved itself . So humidity must have been the problem ! thanks for your suggestions !
