Software update

I have recently been given a nikon af-p nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6g 5.6gb. Unfortunately my Nikon D50 body is nearly 20 years old but in perfect condition. My new lens fits but does not work due to the body being a lot older. Is there any software update I can purchase to rectify this problem? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

No software update to make AFS-P comparable with the D50.
There are several other AF-S 18-55 models which should work fine, just not the P version.

I will just add these 18-55mm lenses were the kit lens included with so many camera bodies over 15 years at least. They are plenty on the used market for cheap. These often were upgraded and very lightly used.

Which 18-55 nikon lenses should I look for, so I know that they work with my D50? As you can see, I am a bit of novice when it comes to lenses. Thanks

Any one of these will work.

AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED
AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II
AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II

The oldest version is listed at the top. Newer is generally better having newer coatings.
The last two have VR which is vibration reduction which may help getting a sharper image.
