An umbrella is typically a softer light. The flash bounces all around in the umbrella and kind of gently washes over the whole area. A softbox is a medium light source. It's more directional than an umbrella, but is still a good quality of light. A grid is hard light because it's very directional. All 3 of these modifiers can come harder or softer based on the above Inverse Square Law and their distance to the subject.</p></blockquote><p></p>
