there are a lot of various calibration tools from the simple DIY
GhettoCAL: A DIY Lens Calibration Tool for Microadjustment-Enabled DSLRs

to the focal automated
Reikan FoCal Automatic Lens Calibration Software - Fully Automatic Lens Calibration and Camera ToolsReikan FoCal Automatic Lens Calibration Software

to lens align

and others.

I just started looking for a focus calibration tool on ebay and found these. its called DSLRKIT. a simple calibration tool. I wanted something simple with little hassle. tape it down to a table, use your tripod, shoot, adjust and im done. costs $2-3 cheaper than the diy in the first link.

Here's a video on dot-tuning:

Maybe Im missing something but my post is for a calibration chart. the technique in the video also uses a chart. my post is for an inexpensive chart. what technique used is a different topic.

I dont think that technique you posted takes 5 minutes and the way I test lenses is much less pictures take than with the technique in that video.

in that video youre shooting to get a range. so that can be quite some pictures. then u adjust.

me? I aim/adjust (using LV)shoot, assess on screen, adjust if needed, reshoot asses, done. so it could be that im done with 2 shots where the video has you shooting many shots to get the range first. 5 min? u sure?

maybe im missing something then?

You don't need a chart to use Dot-tuning. You just need something with enough contrast to focus upon. I never use a chart. I tune a lens within some minutes. Get focus, go through the range, set middle: done. I don't need to take one shot.

The shortcut here is that the focus confirmation is used while going through AF-tuning. You detect the range it gives focus, set the middle of that range and the lens is perfectly tuned. It's not needed to take shots, just pressing the shutter to see if or if not the cam considers it in focus.

If my cam/lens gives a full dot from -4 to +6 I only have to set it to +2 and I'm done.
