He spent 15 minutes with me talking out the possibilities, then told me to send it to Nikon. Nikon won't sell him parts. This, supposedly, to cut out the gray market repairs that "hurt" Nikon USA. The owner told me he works on Canon cameras and lenses all the time, and can easily get parts.
