Yeah, you "got" this cute bird, and this interesting tree, and the sky is OK too, but next time try to avoid two of these objects (the bird and the tree) to be relatively equally focused (branches behind and in front of the bird should be blurred stronger than on these photos). How to do that? First: try to get closer to the scene, second: use wider aperture if applicable with the given (zoom) lens and it's actual focal length (smaller number, say, 4.5 at 100mm and 5.6 at 300mm instead of 6.3 like you did here), third: change the angle (wherever and whenever it's possible, thus avoiding one object to "get in the way" of the other's).
I realize this is not so easy to achieve in many situations, so regard these advices as "theoretical" ones...

On another note: these photos are "squared" (600x600 pix), which leads me to the conclusion that something went wrong while preparing them for posting (when you resized them).

Yes not the most interesting of composures I agree , but not much else to photograph in my garden of any interest.
Plus the small bird was about 12'up a tree. The wood pigeon was similar in distance plus a big fence stopped me from getting any closer.
Thing is , I take notice of all constructive criticism and do try to learn from it.
I'm still learning and thank you for your interest in my piss poor photo's.
So to end Must try harder.

Good. Believe me, the photography is much like a fishing or hunting or having a love affair:)love-struck:) - all you REALLY need for taking good photos (besides having a camera, and you've already own a good camera and a good lens) is patience. Just wait for the right opportunity, and don't be too sorry if you miss some action (soon, another will come your way)...

And, what happened to the resolution of the samples (squared ratio, 1:1)? Have you resized the originals accidentally or purposely that way?

Erm I resized to 12oo x 12oo because I thought that was the limit for download size , I'm still unsure as to what I should be sizing them too to be honest , guess you can tell I'm New to forums.

When you post photos, they are automatically resized by the site's "mechanism", unless you've set it differently in "user options/settings".
But, the main problem here is that you've changed aspect ratio (from 3;2, or 4:3, or 16:9 to 1:1) so they got extended height-wise, so to speak (objects in the photos are displayed as being thinner & taller than they really are).

I used an online converter to resize the images , as I was a member of MF lens forum and had to resize the photos to post on the forum . I just thought this was the same . anyway here is a full resolution pic I took when I was back home.cornwall 2014 132.jpg

I am using the beta version of Capture NX-D and it not only processes the RAW file but when converting you can specify the size. For this site I use 1000 as the long side and the short side adjusts accordingly. You should download the software and try it.

Good to see others with this lens. I have been going out of my mind trying to take sharp photos with this lens above 200mm. I'm thinking of just getting the Nikon 55-200mm AF-S VR and just cropping my pics.
here are a few shots of my never ending (4 week) struggle. lol

Yeah it can be tricky , I find using magnification helps in live view . But it looks sharp on screen then when you load it on the laptop it just a smidgeon out. Obviously tripod helps , but you can't always get one ready at a opportune moments.
I set one up a couple of months back got behind the camera to take nice snap of birdy and the fucker flew off .
Ah well enjoy it Manual lenses are all about perseverance , and when you get it boy you feel proud. And at least it meters.

Hi does anyone know if I can meter in matrix mode with an AF lens, or am I stuck with centre weighted , as that seems to be the default setting on the manual lens.

I have no idea of this lens, but on my D3300 all metering modes are available with the CPU lenses, in my case with the following lenses which are manual focus on my camera :
- 50mm AF (non D)
- 70-300 G (non VR)

I notice on the only shot with Exif still there you where at f5.6,to use a lens wide open it normally needs to be a very expensive lens, have you tried it around f8 or 11

I think that I'll just have to except the fact that a 180 dollar zoom lens, will never take a photo like the ones those professionals use for wildlife.
I've been looking at a lot of pics on 500px and they are just amazing. The clarity and the sharpness just blows me a away.

Taken at f8 and f11 iso 400 , bit wet today , but rain not stop me playing .
some photos using this lens can look a little washed out , I'm not sure whether to up the saturation on the D5200 or the contrast .
Tis lens always suprises me after owning it for just a couple of weeks I'm getting the hang of it and the photos are not bad at all .
