Sigma 70-300mm macro & D7200 Compatibility Issue?

I have a Sigma 70-300mm macro that I just mailed to a friend with a D7200 to check out since she doesn't need a macro but would like the functionality. It worked fine when I boxed it up and it arrived just fine, but it's giving an 'F EE' error on her D7200. I know there have been rumors of Nikon screwing with the compatibility of cheaper Sigma glass on recent models, so I'm wondering if this is one of those things. I can't find anything online, but I've not been paying much attention to day to day chatter anywhere.

I've asked her to try it on her D90 to see if it works there assuming that if it does then it's not the lens.

I tried it on my D7100, D610 and D750 before sending it out.

I called Sigma and they said that, yes, there's a compatibility issue with the D7200 and they have a firmware upgrade for the lens that they will apply for free if I send it in.

My friend contacted Nikon and this is a direct quote from her customer support email...

Thank you for calling Nikon. We do not recommend using 3rd party lenses with your D7200. We do have Micro lenses from Nikon: ...

...and it goes on to link to their website.

Really, Nikon?! You're now installing hacks to make sure people to buy your glass?!

This, and this specifically, is why I can see myself never buying another Nikon DSLR body. Utter nonsense. You have to wait 2-4 months for world class editing software to support the new RAW format because they will not issue it in advance to vendors like Canon does, and you are now running the risk of rendering all your non-Nikkor lenses inoperable until the vendor comes up with a firmware fix - if that ever happens.

You really suck, Nikon. Seriously, seriously suck. Remember Sony and the Betamax? Even if it's better, people will refuse to buy it if they have no choices in accessories.

I have said for a long time if Nikon cameras only worked with Nikon lenses there sales would plummet.

With the 1 series many owners had independent make lenses working until Nikon did a firmware upgrade.

So, on that note.....what brand will you be going to next? Or do you know at this point in time? Sorry to hear Nikon is out trying to screw their good customers.

I think you're both right, they have their heads so far up their arses that they don't even realize they're screwing their customers while they screw their customers.

To be clear, saying I won't buy another Nikon DSLR body is not the same as saying I'm going elsewhere. I'm up to my neck in great Nikons at the moment and can likely live with these for a LONG time without any need to upgrade. A couple hundred bucks buys me an adapter that would allow me to use most of my Nikon lenses on my Sony a6000 with full functionality. There's nothing I can possibly want to shoot that I am not currently capable of shooting, so I won't know the answer to the question to the "Where will you go?" question until I find myself lacking when I truly need it. I can seriously see going Sony if nothing changes, but for now I'm just happy shooting.
