Is there much difference between a Sigma 50-500mm and a 150-500mm lens on a D3100.

I ask because I may be able to buy one or the other and would like some advice.

For Birding mainly.

I also believe that a TC can be used with these if needed?

I had the Big Ma ( 50-500mm).It was an older lens, and didn't have OS.It also liked lots of light and the sweat spot was F8.Good clear pictures if you have a steady hand. For long shots I used a tripod and at 500mm I also used a cordless remote shutter release. If I had the money, the 50-500mm with all the new buttons (OS) is my way to go for shots up to 450mm.Images can get a hint fuzzy over 450mm.I have read reviews on the 150-500 that sound pretty good at 500mm.It's a tough choice, good luck.

the sigma 50-500 and 150-500 are f6.3 at anything over 200mm making them rather light hungry, the af on your d3200 may become a little sketchy due to this. forget the teleconverter!
also the effective focal length of both lenses reduces rapidly as you move closer to your subject, at 500mm both are on the soft side with questionable af performance.
the best option for dx would be a used 300 f4. use it on its own for a while to learn some long lens technique and then add the nikon tc 14ii........fixed focal length but far better all round.
i was in the same situation looking at the sigmas but too many bad reviews particularly the 150-500.
