Picked up a Sigma 150-500 on the way home tonight and have been out round the block and down the wood for a play, and i love it!

To cut a long story short, iwent to a Bird of Prey photography tuition day on Sunday and had a fantastic time, during lunch i was talking to one of the guys running it and talking about what kit we had,( i was using a 55-300 Nikion lense on my D5100 and got some reasonable shots) he said that he had just bought himself a Nikon 500 F4 and that he was going to sell a couple of lenses to get abit of money back,i asked what he was selling and he said he had a Sigma 150-500,now i hav'nt got the sort of funds to go out and spend a grand on a lense but when he said he would sell it for £450 my eyes lit up and i considered selling a kidney or something, cut a long story short went home begged the missus and she told me to go get it,went tonight and as soon as i got there i knew it was going to be a good one as hewas the sort of guy who looks after his equipment, got everything Case ,straps paper work, box and the lense all like new for £430,never though i would be able to get my hands on a lense like that it the near future,i am like a dog with two doodahs.

P.S Also got to play with the 500 F4 in his garden but not the sort of thing you want to be handholding, can't wait till he wants to sell that one LOL

I know these are not that sharp ,but i was amazed at the distance i could get them from compared to my 55-300 , also hand held, and the light was going buy the time i got home, cant wait to get down the shore with some good light and fitted to my tripod.

I use mine as much as just about any other lens I have, and maybe as much as all my other lenses combined. A little soft wide open and at 500mm, but otherwise it's a fine bunch of glass.

Congratulations! I am sure you are going to love shooting with that lens. I've added that to my wish list and hope to someday at a really good price.

F8 and above is your friend with this weapon. Sharpens right up then. Don't be afraid to raise your ISO to keep your shutter speed up. It's a light lover.

Many thanks for your replys,Backdoorhippie,i checked through some of your older posts when considering whether to buy the lens(although i didn't need much convincing)this is what i like about this forum, you get to speak to people who have hands on experience of products and equipment.

It autofocus's ok i as long as ther is enough contrast in the subject,i find it struggles a little otherwise, like all of the reviews i read(and there were alot) just twist pull it back a tad and it seems ok,also f8 does seem to be where this lens likes to be,had it out last night fixed to my Blackrapid strap and it was comfortable to use, mind you took my 55-300 out this morning and it now feels as if i am carrying a point and shoot after that monster.

Congrats on your new lens. I have rented one of these a few times for use at the wildlife refuge and I must say I have always been impressed with it. I would love to own one.

Congrats of your lens. I've had mine for a couple of years and love it. As others have said, it needs light for autofocus. While I can and have used it hand-held. I prefer to use it on a tripod because of its weight.
