I do not venture below 1/30s when handholding. Also if you use a sling, you can use that to steady yourself also.

Given that you were using a 35mm prime you could have opened up more, particularly given that a painting has no depth of field other than the frame. That might have gotten you to a more manageable shutter speed. The D7100 has more than decent high ISO noise, so consider using Auto ISO indoors, setting you max ISO to whatever you're comfortable with (I was going to say 3200, but heck, go for 6400), and a minimum shutter speed equivalent to you focal length if you don't have VR, and maybe one tick below if you do. Then set the aperture appropriately (shooting in Aperture priority mode) and hope for the best.

The auto shutter speed setting under auto iso works nicely on the d7100. It considers the focal length and picks an appropriate minimum speed. You can tweak it too to choose a higher or lower relative speed. As is, it will probably keep you around 1/60 @ 35mm, not a bad thing.

For some reason I keep forgetting about the Auto shutter speed setting and keep setting it manually both on my D600 and D800. Setting it to Auto would certainly keep me from getting frustrated when the camera is giving me higher ISO's and 1/200 shutter speeds on my fisheye when I forget to change things. LOL

I'm on the road so i don't have d7100 book with me. Question is where do i find the setting for shutter speed auto at?
Looked in menu and can't seem to find it.
Thanks

Its under shooting menu- iso sensitivity. Look for minimum shutter speed and get into that menu. One of the choices is 'auto' and the very top of the list of shutter speeds. Also while you are in the iso menu, set base iso to 100, that will be your starting point. and set your max to whatever you want. and of course turn auto iso on.

I don't have the D7100, but on the D7000 you can find the setting under the following options:

Menu --> Shooting Menu --> ISO sensitivity settings --> Auto ISO sensitivity control (has to be ON)

Menu --> Shooting Menu --> ISO sensitivity settings --> Maximum sensitivity (Lowest number that gives you acceptable noise level)

Menu --> Shooting Menu --> ISO sensitivity settings --> Minimum shutter speed (your slowest shutter speed)

The D7000 does not have the setting we are talking about. The d7100 added a new auto iso feature of automatically selecting the minimum shutter speed based on the lens focal length. So instead of picking a single minimum shutter speed, you select auto. The minimum shutter speed will automatically readjust based on the lens installed or zoom level.

Oh...I see. I thought he was talking about the option to manually set the slowest shutter speed. Didn't realize they added the auto to the D7100. That actually seems very useful.
