Hello, thanks for any help or advice you have, and I'm sorry for such a long post but I wanted to put down everything I know about my situation. A strange problem started occurring in the past week on my D3100. I bought it used with around 1.2k shutter actuations and since I've taken around 3k photos with my only lens, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR. There are 2 problems that happen randomly and separately from each other. I think this will have to be repaired but I'm trying to price out the repair before I send it in so I'm wondering if the shutter is broken or something else. Also is there any potential for further problems or damage if I continue to use it? Some observations: --They happened every shot in normal shutter mode --Eventually it started happening in quiet shutter mode with normal exposures still happening every1/10 shots or so --The above holds true in live view mode --Happens in auto and manual modes. --I locked the mirror up and looked and the mirror moved all the way out of the way. --I took the lens off and shot a few photos at different shutter speeds, shutter actuation looked normal, the blurry frames showed both artifacts --Though it appears to be a shutter problem, I read a post on this forum indicating that the orientation of the sensor and the way the mirror moves would mean that a slow/stuck/partially moving mirror would cut off the bottom of the frame, not the top. This combined with the low shutter count makes me feel like this is a sensor problem but about some photos do appear totally normal. Problem 1. there is a sizable horizontal black band across the top of the photo. problem 2. there is an horizontal bad that is much more exposed than the rest of the frame sandwiched between two that are exposed according to the camera settings. This becomes much more pronounced when the photo is under exposed and set to high ISO. Auto Mode: manual f/8 iso3200 shutter 1/4000: Same settings, in quiet shutter mode, this is how the above two photos should appear:
