Shutter Mal-function/Lag

When I use my camera- D5100, at high shutter speeds in view finder mode, the time of the two clicks aren't of much difference with the low shutter speeds.. It behaves like a 1/16 fps even when it is at the speed of 1/4000 fps. Is it a hardware issue which has to be repaired or have I gone wrong somewhere?

I think it would be instructive to learn what shutter speed they use when they make a claim that a given camera has an x fps speed vs. a different camera with a y fps speed.

I think that maybe you confuse 1/16 of a second to 16 frame per second. Now the difference of shutter sound between 1/16 and 1/4000 should be audible, but remember that the mirror only can come up and down so fast. A shutter speed of 1/4000 does not mean that you can take 4000 shots per seconds.

The inclusion of fps was a typo. I very well am aware of the sound difference between 1/16 and 1/4000 which is why I am bothered. The shutter sound is not as 'frequent' as a normal 1/4000 should be.

What do you mean "not as frequent"…?

I am currently having this same problem, and I have no idea what is causing it or how to fix it.
I'm experiencing a noticeable length of time in between the "clicks" at a high shutter speed, sometimes the lag is greater than a low shutter speed. I've even had instances when I hold the button down and nothing will happen, I have to push several times for it to even begin taking photos.

I have a D5100 and there is a setting that makes the response when you take a pic seem very slow. It's called something like 'mirror up before shooting'. Once I'd turned the setting off, my camera was alot more responsive.

On my old D3100 the only reference I ever saw to mirror up mode, was actually called on the camera the "Quiet Release Mode." Whereby the mirror was raised prior to you taking a shot with the camera, and stayed up until the switch was repositioned. I used the "Quiet Release Mode" once in a year of ownership and didn't find it
noticeably quieter than the regular shooting mode. Plus I didn't notice any speed loss either.

set it to single mode, first 1/16, than 1/4000, and you will hear the speed difference but, in each case there is the first mirror up,, then the actual shutter release, so think of this as first a constant time that represents the mirror up mode, and then the variable time of the actual snap.

If you want to just hear the sound of the shutter, well, actually shoot in mirror up mode, where the first shutter press raises the mirror, and the second snaps the shutter, then you will hear a very distinct difference.

Never should the shot take noticable time, unless shooting slower then say 1/16th of a second. Heck, some of the VR and or old time shooters will brag on how they can hand hold a camera at 1/16th without shake (I am more of a 1/30th minimum).
