Shooting combat sports- lenses

As the title suggests, I have been getting around some local MMA and combat sports promotions asking to shoot some of their events. considering I would be sat ringside, what is the best type of lens for a decent shot with most participants to be in the photo or an up close of kicks and punches connecting???

I'm thinking a 24-70 of some sort for the f2.8 capabilities as well.

Haven't shot this, but a 24-70 f/2.8 sounds reasonable. The camera body, full frame, would really be to your advantage as you will need to crank up the ISO to shoot at a fast enough shutter speed to capture the action under the poor lighting.
