SB-910, SB -700 or i40 as a daily aid in mountain walkin

I have an Nissin i40 on my D750
this flash works, but I have real trouble in using it, I am mostly doing off the camera
placing flash 0,5 to one metre away

Will a SB-910 work better?

I can get a SB -910 used at a price 40 usd more thn SB-700

ANd SB-700 how is that one in user interface? Any real good alternatives?

This is my style; Nikon d750, Niikkor 105 VR micro, It was heawy overcast, could barely see the plant

The SB-910 is more powerful than the SB-700, but both are quite capable in their performance. There is a setting that the SB-910 offers that isn't on the SB-700. I *think* it is that the SB-910 offers both TTL and TTL BL while the SB-700 only has TTL (not TTL BL).

I left some batteries in my SB-910 for a few weeks which leaked inside. It cost me @ $180 to get it fixed. Nikon also replaced the flash tube even though the flash wasn't used too often--probably because it's more of a general maintenance service rather than needing it. Nikon does suggest to get the flash tube replaced every so often. I'm only mentioning it because one of the flashes you mentioned is used. It will give you an idea of how much a possible repair might cost if the flash tube starts to give you problems.

Oh...and both flashes operate similarly when making adjustments to them.

Sorry, I didnt understand much of that tech

This straigt out of the camera -- yesterday. My sb-910 was lyuing on my backpack som one meter away.
Used wrong lens, forgot to bring my 105 micro. So this is 60 macro.

Flash on camera didnt fire! all the light from the left is sb-910.
This was in the evening, low sun. There was some weak sunrays coming in from upper right, dont know if you see these.

NB The sb-910 did beep three times and then a short beep like so; diit diit diit diiiiit
Why???

Both the master and remote flash units have

Mea Culpa!

It beeped once. Sorry I didnt know how the non correct lots of beeping was.

Now I know. I gave my setup d750/ 105 micro/ sb-910 a workout in my garden.

The error beeping is unmistakingly oh yes! As are the once beep for OK.

Thes two photos are straaight out of the camera. And it also gave me some hint -- the more distance the better;
flash at 1,50 mtr away was nice when I was about 20 cm away from the flower.

Just about ALL my macro shots are with SB-910, but I hardly care for TTL, so any other equally-powerful flash would do IMO. Neewer 985N was just as good from what I recall when I had a paid for my set. Very hard to say no to but $50 with all the bells and whistles.

Thats why I bought it seconhand -- cheap

This is somemthing for fun; taken in deep shadows under a dense shrub;'

You see the light ? Thats the flash. I laid it flat under the spiny tiny plant, covered the flash with foliage of that plant.
And I repeat -- the built in flash on my d750 did NOT fire! Only the preflash to trigger sb-910

Never done this experiment before, might be useful in tricky situations.....

Botched copies exist, of course, but neither of the two I had had any issues whatsoever and I put them both through a good bit more than 10 or even 25 flashes. If Yongnuo made an equivalent, perhaps that to save $.

I honestly only even own 910 because one old, heavily recurring client would always shaft me on proper payment and I traded him my YN565 I had for the 910 given I was still making him tons of material. This poor 910 had 1mm layer of dust on it, and this flash deserves heavy use and abuse instead of cobwebs.

My camera was commander, flash didnt fire.
