Samyang?

Anyone here played with a Samyang 85 f1.4? A buddy was talking about his at work, but I can't relate to his opinions since he is not a Nikon shooter.

He is in love with his and says it's pretty comparable to his other 1.4s wide open. I believe he is a Canon shooter though. So I was wondering about the Nikon version. Any owners out there?

Samyang, Rokinon and Bower these lenses are all the same just marketed under different brands. These are manual lenses, however IIRC it comes with a focus confirmation chip. Less than what a major brand lens, you can basically get a semi decent lens with no bells and whistles. My recommendation though would be to try the lens out or watch reviews on youtube to see if this lens would be something you want to consider.

I am not too worried about the MF. I am looking for more of a static portrait lens. And still life. Something where I will be shooting at a slower pace. And since this is designed for MF I was told that it has a much better feel than what an AF lens just switched to MF has.

My buddy was going calf eyed over the throw of the lens.....he had nothing but praise for it. And from what I can see, these are some stellar lenses for the price. MF or not.

I am thinking the Samyang will work very well for my needs. The GF will kill me if I make any big lens purchases this year. (The D610 was big enough) But I am thinking a few of these lenses wouldn't get me hurt too bad. LoL.

I have one and can only say it's a wonderful lens. Nice bokeh and VERY sharp when in focus. Focusing with a 1.4 lens is at times challenging if you haven't changed your focusing screen.

IIRC, only the Rokinon variety comes with a chip to allow for automatic exposure control (and that, only on Nikon mounts). The Samyang and Bower varieties are full manual.

Certain combo varieties have the confirmation chip between them. One may have at 14, another at 85 etc.
