Day 057 (The secret to Night 056) For the moon shot last night, I used a 70mm zoom on the camera. However, I cheated and used an objective lens of 80mm in diameter with a focal length of 1200mm. It was touch and go to get it focused right, since my eyesight isn't up to par. I wound up turning off the autofocus and just did it manually, after I got the exposure the way I wanted it. I think if I did the math right, and we all know how I do math. :p The total magnification of the moon in my setup would be 17.1428571429x, then throw in the crop factor and there's the final product. Here's the lens I used. It's on the end of a telescope. I didn't use any eyepiece, though I tried a big 40mm and that didn't work at all. So I took it out, and it was just me holding the camera ever so steady as one mm to one side or the other and the whole moon disappeared. The lens is seriously dirty, it's been around for 40 some years and barely gets any use. I know you can get a doohickey to hook your camera up to telescopes, but if I'm going to do that, I'm going to get a new telescope too! Someone also told me if I go through all that trouble to take a photo of the moon, I should at least dress it up a bit. Ok, here ya go... Oh, that moon might be upside down too. Not sure, I'll have to look sometime in the day through the lens. But not while this ice storm is going, it's nasty out.
