In your initial post, you mentioned the lens hunted. Did it hunt a lot or just a little? The one I recently got hunts just a little bit but certainly not all the time. Perhaps it was just the copy you had--have you checked one out at a local store to see if another one is any better?

I am conflicted on Tamrons..Good reviews...But then some not so good feedback as well..I am not a Nikon snob, but honestly nervous to try third party..They are reverse engineered and doing the firmware updates on them seem to be giving people problems...

The 105 2.8 is going to hunt a lot if handheld for macro, mine did too, shooting macro with a tripod, no hunting. When I use it as a walk-around, not close up, there is no hunting. I think the razor thin DoF in macro, up close creates the hunting due to body motion. It's surprising how much we move when we think we are controlling it.

Am I crazy for reconsidering giving the 105mm micro another shot..Looking back at some portrait type shots..Ive realized they were quite sharp..Was saving for a 70-200mm or a updated 135mm,but am starting to second guess getting rid of this lens,,Thoughts?

I love love love my 105mm. It alternates with my 16-35mm F4 as my favourite lens. I find that it shoots much better on my D800E then it did on my D5100 that I used to use it on. It's just sooooo good on FX.

I agree with what Rick is saying about non tripod macro work. Sometimes a tripod is just not gonna cut it though. (like when shooting macro in a fish tank.) I set the shutter speed I'm gonna need first then aperture, then adjust my ISO accordingly. I'll add extra light if needed so my ISO doesn't climb too high.
