Remote Shutter Release - Using a Wireless Trigger?

Hi Folks,

I am new to the forum so please be gentle :), i have been reading for a while, but this is my first post.

I am looking for some help, i am looking for a way to remote fire my shutter using a wireless trigger, bear with me and ill try and explain!

I know this is possible with pocket wizards and the correct sync cable. I already have a cheap (but very effective) set of wireless receivers that are triggered via a hot shoe transmitter.

The receivers do have the small sync port that i have used to sync them to my studio lights. What i am looking for is a cable that i could connect from the small sync port on the receiver to the cable release port on the side of the D5100 thus being able to fire the shot using the transmitter "test" button.

I hope this makes sense! any questions or clarification please let me know

Thanks

Andy

I've got a Nikon ML-L3 that works great with my D90 & D7000. Not sure if it works with the D5100, but it's convenient provided there's a rear IR sensor.

Thanks guys, Patrick, i wasnt aware of this product ill check it out, i was wanting to utilise my existing equipment that i have, just by purchasing the right cable if possible, i do have a nikon wireless remote, but i dont recall having it work from the rear.

I will need to test this and see what kind of range it has.

Do you guys have any idea if the cable that i am thinking of exists?

Cheers for your input

When I had my D5100 I used the ML-L3 and it worked great for what I needed it for so I don't see why you would want anything other that that it is very useful.

Thanks

I just pulled out my cheap knock-off "For Nikon" wireless remote. Set the camera up facing away form me. 10 feet from camera and pointing at the BACK of the camera it fired with no problems.

If you need to fire it from the back, why not just fire from front but being off to whatever side doesn't get in the way of the shot?

Thanks again, I appreciate your comments.

The range i have on my wireless (radio) receivers is much greater than the nikon wireless remote i have.

I am looking to set up a shot where the camera is hidden (so the IR would not be the most suitable option). That is why i am looking to try and find a cable, as i cant see a cable costing anywhere as near as much as a pocket wizard system or the new WR-R10/WR-T10.

Can anyone help out and advise what the D5100 cable release termination is? (ie usb - i know its not usb!!) i want to be able to search and see if i can find that particular cable.

Thanks again

Some situations make it impossible to be in that position, which is why the rear IR sensor is handy. Though in learning to live without either on the D800, I'm thinking I'll be using the Vello RF remote I got for that for everything from now on.

Going to play ghost busters or something of that note with a long cable button to snap away? :D

Nikon MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord 25395

At least you can always splice the cables to get whatever length you need given you're handy with a soldering iron (and well, assuming there's really only 1-2 working pins for this guy. I can't imagine a simple shutter release needing any more communication with the body)
