Thanks Glenn for your quick response. I am a bit scared of these cords since I completely ruined my old nikon flash by using a cord of no repute.

Apart from the recommended SC-28, what other cords can be used with SB-400?

The earlier Nikon SC-17 version is the same as the newer SC-28, everything except the newer shoe lock. And they are plentiful and inexpensive on Ebay. All I have is a couple of the older ones, and they give no trouble at all. The shoe lock on the new flash rotates to drop the pin into a hole. There is no hole in the old one, but the pin is spring loaded, just drop it anyway, and it holds very tight, flash is not going anywhere. Never any hint of trouble. The versions are compatible in that way.

There is a bigger issue with using a TTL BL flash on either cable (which includes SB-400 and SB-700). The off camera flash is not at the same location as the camera, which can seriously fool the camera metering automation. Selecting Spot metering mode can bypass it. Also a camera FV Lock option will, or a flash TTL menu choice will, but these last two are not so common on much equipment.

See Review of the Yongnuo YN565EX Speedlight for an demonstration of this issue.
