thanks for the replies its given me a lot to think about, and ive been reviewing articles about sharpness and how to improve it. I might stick with the 18-105 for a little while longer, although Ive always fancied a wide angle lens.

Well ive ordered a good used sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 as it was in my price range, I was tempted by the Tokina but I couldnt find a decent one for my budget. Ive got a 14 days trial period on the sigma so Ill see if Im happy with that. I know there are mixed reviews about its sharpness etc but it would compliment my 18-105 nicely without much overlap of focal lengths.

my new lens arrived today and ive just had a half hour in the garden taking some pics, nothing worth posting online.
Its about what I expected in terms of distortion of vertical lines, Im just amazed how wide 10mm is, it must be mad on a full frame camera.
I did a comparison shot with my 18-105mm and the 10-20mm at F4.5 at 18mm. In terms of sharpness Id say the sigma is slightly better, but the main difference is the reduction in chromatic aberrations, colour fringing and improved contrast. Im definately glad I decided to get a better lens as I was dissapointed with the Nikon one in terms of IQ. The HSM on the Sigma seems to work just as nicely as the Nikon, theres no manual focus switch on it but on my D60 Ive only got to press two buttons to turn it off anyway so its no big deal.
So once Ive had a play and get a chance over the weekend Ill post some shots.
