Questions on D5100 & 55-200 Kit

I had a minor problem yesterday... I took a bunch of shots at Vote Location of people arriving etc...

When I went to process in LR4, I noticed many were very grainy on tight crops... and it seemed to be worse at the end, 200mm.

Please note, it was early am and I had ISO at 1250, (I was under the impression the 5100 was low noise even on the higher ISO) shooting aperture preferred. I know the crop hurt but I didmuch better with those at 125mm to 200mm....

Is that inherant in the body and or the lens at the 200mm end??? Other than that issue (may be me) it has performed well..

here are a couple of the ok ones...

Thanks for any input....

1250 is at the range that grain starts to come into play. I like to keep my D7000 below ISO 800 for shots that I am concerned about grain.

Usually lens effect at the upper end effects sharpness and distortion, but less of a noise effect. Noise is more a factor of the sensor.

we are getting a bit spoiled, the point is at the upper ISO is that one can still get a usable picture, not neccessary the best picture.

Spoiled.. I like that!!!

Thank you for the reply. I guess maybe I put too much into the ratings for High ISO on the 5200.. may be like you said, rated to make a usable picture.. The ones that I did not blur were usable snaps but not heavy head shot crops. (Some were good though too). I was pushing the envelope with many subjects moving and too far away, severe crops etc.

Likely I just need to learn the limits of the gear.. I will do a test later at a stationary object and do 100, 200, 800, 1600, 3200 and 6400... also do each at 55mm 125mm and 200mm.. Then I can see what the affects and capability are..

Again, thanks for the reply

1250 is far to high. Looks like you were in good daylight; therefore, no need to go over 200. Yes, the 5100 is good at high ISO, but no need to use when it is not needed. of course, if you crop, it will become noticeable. At the very end of the focal length, pretty much all telephotos will have some sort of issue. I have noticed it a few times, but most oher times, it is not noticeable. Again, no need to use ISO 1250 out in the daytime.

It was pretty dim when I first got there... and shooting in Aperture Mode.. I wanted to assurre a higher shutter as the subjects were moving.. You are absolutely correct in that I could have dials it back down as the light improved... One of those things I need to watch (and I made it worse with the crops but did not have enough "zoom")

Thanks for your comments and suggestions... best way to learn, along with keep shooting...

Ted, you know, that is a good question... I do not useally (almost never) use it but this is one of those places it may have had a great benefit. I was in AP mode... maybe I should have been in M mode and set the aperture and shutter to what I wanted with Auto ISO making the adjustments for the light (and decreasing automatically as the light increased...

Thanks for the thought.... each day is a new day of learning...

The reason I ask, is ISO doesn't really add or detract from creative ability. Yes, you need a correct ISO, but higher or lower can only hurt a photo. Auto ISO works, but if you discover a change is necessary, then you have that option. I'm not an expert, so this simply a novice observation.

ALSO.... How'd you get a picture of Marcel voting in NH? I guess somebody was importing voters from our northern neighbor. I call "foul".

no need to go over 200

As a fellow D5100 owner, I'd disagree with that. To keep shutter speeds a 1/60 and above I regularly have to use 200, 400 and even 800 outdoors unless it's really quite bright.

I also have a 5100. As i said in my comment, "Looks like you were in good daylight; therefore, no need to go over 200." This was me assuming that he was in good daylight.

part 1: I would agree with that assessment Ted.. I just like set & forget the ISO for normal conditions.. This was not so normal (Lower starting light, too far away (or not enough lense) and then wanting a close crop). Hindsight, this would have been a perfect spot to set the other 2 of the triangle and let the ISO Move.. I WILL try that the next time that situation occurs... I do appreciate your thoughts... I have not had too many "issues" with NOT getting what I expected, but it is nice to be able to question here when I do!

part 2: I knew that person looked familiar when he walked up, he skulked in from the back lot so maybe he was trying to to be secretive... we need to contact the border patrol now~~!!!! (Too Funny!)
