Welcome to Nikonites rosecityrn! The screen staying on longer can be adjusted in the Setup Menu as follows: 1. Press the Menu Button and navigate to the Setup Menu tab. 2. Select the Auto off timers and press OK. 3. Highlight you choice of timer settings (my preference is Custom 30 sec). Select custom and then select each timer you wish to shorten or extend time press OK for each change. Click on DONE when finished. Right after I got my D3100 as a gift I bought the book "Nikon D3100 From Snapshots to Great Shots" by Jeff Revell. I too am new to DSLR and wanted to know more about photography in general. The writer gives a chance at the end of each chapter to practice what you've learned in doing so builds your knowledge gradually to the next level. I love they way he writes and shows examples so you can navigate the menus with ease. Hope this helps.
