Typically I start by looking for a place with good foot traffic of a lot of people going to and fro. I then look for a spot with open shade to get soft lighting. I then look for a spot where I can be close to the people walking by but a place to lean against a wall or pole so I can be steady. I either use my 70-300 VR or my 18-200 VRII. I look for someone interesting from a bit of a distance walk in my direction and start watching them through the viewfinder as they get closer and closer. If they are interesting and the lighting is not too harsh I'll start shooting and continue to follow that person as they get closer and closer to me. At a point they notice me and that is where I get that eye contact and I know I got the shot. I want them to notice me and get that engagement. Some people acknowledge me, some do not. Some chat and ask me what I'm shooting for and have a conversation, some just walk on by. A very few ask me not to shoot them but not get angry. If someone asks me not to shoot them I stop. If it's kids like the two babies I shot a month ago or so I asked the mom's permission to shoot and got their email sent them the pictures and asked if I could post them before I did. There was someone not too long ago who was a homeless lady. As I walked by I gave her a few dollars and asked if she minded if I shot pictures of her. Then I got about 15 feet away but close enough to chat. As we chatted and she interacted with people walking by I shot a series of pictures with 2 good ones in the end. She was a great and interesting person with a very unique perspective. Most often people see me know what I'm doing give me a look right into the lens but just walk on by. There are a few spots which I go to on a semi regular basis. In those spots I'm getting to know the locals and be a part of that environment.
