Processing RAW images

With one eye on my bank balance I am looking for software to process RAW images from the D5100. I had Silkypix SE with another camera but that will not look at Nikon images. The "proper" version of that s/w does not list the D5100 either.

Any recommendations as to such software?

ViewNX2 will process RAW images.
Elements seems to be a good option for editing, though I've been looking at Lightroom too (which doesn't let you edit, which is a shame)

If you use a Mac, GIMP is available for free...

Don't forget that preliminary RAW file adjustments can be made in camera with the D5100.
