Problems with D7100 and Nikkor 50mm 1.4D

Hi,
I am a long time Nikon user and have had a range of cameras/lenses. I recently acquired a D7100 to accompany me on shoots alongside my D800, this way I could still make use of the decent DX lenses I had accumulated. One of the first lenses I tried on the D7100 was my trusty 50mm 1.4D, and the pairing was superb. However, two months on, the combination has stopped working. As soon as I snap on the lens I get an fEE error on my camera display. I am fully aware of the aperture ring issue i.e ring on smallest aperture and lock switch on. I also tried formatting the SD card in case it had anything to do, but no success.

Here's the interesting part: If I snap on the 50 1.4 on my older D2X or even on the D800, it works fine. The other test involved using different lenses on the D7100 (17-55 2.8; 70-200 2.8) and both worked perfectly. Therefore I have narrowed it down to just being this specific combination (50 1.4D on D7100) - even then, this combination was working fine at the start. I cannot think of anything I might recently have done to cause this, the last use of the camera involved some video shooting with a wide lens but this is a normal camera function that shouldn't affect lens systems in any way. Slightly baffled by this one. Any help/advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

That is indeed strange and you've already done a great job in trouble shooting.

Time to sell the lens or just avoid that combo with d7100.

I agree with Fred above, clean all the contacts on the lens and camera body with Deoxit or Alcohol and a swab. Deoxit is made to especially clean gold contacts.

Here is a link for a how to: Clean Contacts

I wouldn't use an eraser or anything like that (abrasive) since it would scratch and probably deposit residue in the camera body.

Hi all, thanks for your replies. You have confirmed much of what I was thinking. I will proceed with cleaning the lens contacts, and if that doesn't work out then I'll go and do the same with the camera points. Will keep you posted on how it goes.

Many thanks, @sharpsnapper

Hi, just thought I'd provide an update regarding my D7100. I tried cleaning the contact points on the camera body as well as on the 50mm, but still no success. I took it to the store where I purchased the camera and asked them to test it out for me, and they too could not explain the malfunction. After continued testing, we realised that it was affecting Nikkor lenses alone i.e. compatible Sigma lenses were fine. The configuration of the contact points differs from one lens-type to the other and the body has developed a fault when it comes to reading from the Nikkor lens....for some obscure reason. Anyway, the body is only 3 months old so they will be replacing it for no cost. On a related note - I have the option of upgrading the body as opposed to swapping like for like, does anyone think there will be a D7200 or another DX format flagship out anytime soon?

Thanks,
sharpsnapper.

There's been talk of the D7200 almost since the D7100 launched. So thoughts are for this Feb in time for Fathers Day. However, the D7100 is still the best of kind despite Canon's newbies...so while sales are strong, there no reason for any upgrade (yet)
