Problem with Nikkor Micro 105

My new Nikkor 105 2.8 G Micro is acting strangely. On both my D90 and D700 the aperture range of the lens is 4.8 to 54. The specifications for the lens are f2.8 to f32. My other lens read properly on both cameras.

I haven't had the chance to take it out and see how it works with exposure, but I'm going to bet that my photos will be overexposed.

Does anyone have any idea about what I might do to fix this without sending it in for service?

Thanks.

I purchased it about a month ago. I'm going to contact the retailer on Monday and if needed, NikonUSA as well. I purchased it on Aug 2nd. Definitely not what I had in mind when I purchased this lens.

Whiskeyman,

There is nothing wrong with your lens.
At 1:1 magnification the aperture varies from f/4.8 to f/52 (sometimes even f/57)
at other magnification levels, the apertures will fall down till at infinity focus the apertures will be between f/2.8 to f/32.
As the name implies the Nikkor is a macro lens with a min. focus distance of 0.31m resulting in a max. object magnification of 1:1 and a working distance of min. ~15cm.
At 1:1 the max. aperture decreases to f/4.8 which is a quite typical characteristic for an IF (internal focusing) macro lens.

Hope that takes the jitters away! :)
I just rechecked this on my lens too & that's how it behaves..

Whitelight, my jitters are indeed driven away. I read your post this morning and tried your recommendation and the lens aperture range is indicating as it should. I couldn't get to the lens' manual last night when I noticed the aperture range, but it's obviously something I need to read.

Thank you.
