The last full frame camera I owned was the venerable Nikon D750. It was a fine camera but I eventually sold it and all but one of my full frame lenses (kept an AF-P FX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR) to fund a lightly used (4,723 shutter count) D500 body. As noted elsewhere, I acquired a Z50ii late last year. I've found it to also be an excellent wildlife camera. The inclusion of the Expeed 7 processor and subject detection algorithms in the APS-C body is a game changer IMO. Its performance also got me thinking about other Nikon mirrorless bodies with the same processor. The Z8 and Z9 are outside my budget, so I started to look at the Z6iii. Its sensor is not as big (24.5MP) as those in the Z8/Z9 (45MP) but it does have a new partially stacked CMOS sensor to further enhance readout speed. What was missing, I learned, was a dedicated bird detection mode, something that is present in my Z50ii. What was Nikon thinking?? Even so, the animal detection mode seems to get good marks from trusted on-line reviewers when it comes to birds, including BIFs. Ah, but wait a minute. In mid-April, NikonUSA stated for the record: "We plan to add Bird detect AF to the Z6iii by the end of the year, Stay tuned!" Alrighty, then. With that in mind, I sold my D7500 along with an FX and several DX lenses and bought a new Z6iii. The D7500 had already been overtaken by the Z50ii as a backup to the D500. The Z6iii has literally just arrived so no pix yet. My plan is to use it with the 28-400mm f/4-8 which I had previously dedicated to the Z50ii. I'll once again use my excellent 50-250mm Z DX VR kit lens with the Z50ii. I also own a Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens so that will move over to the Z6iii as well. I'm looking forward to getting the new camera set up and using it in the field.
