After a lot of searching on the web and fiddling about I discovered that at the front of the flash just above the locking ring, hidden in the threads, was a little silver lever that I managed to lift with a jewellers screw driver undoing the pin. The flash still works perfectly but with the aid of a pair of side cutters the lock pin is no longer there.
