Quick update on the D810 repair process: Success! Well...mostly. Turns out that for reasons unknown to me, the connector that feeds signals to the back panel LCD display is damaged, and I don't believe I caused that. So I'll have to replace that connector. Which is NOT a job for the faint hearted, as replacing a surface mounted connector is specialized work. Fortunately, I'm qualified to do it. And I found the exact match part, but I've got to get them as samples from the manufacturer as any other source of them has a minimum order quantity of 5000 pieces. The camera takes photos just fine. You just can't review them. One other issue: The actuator arm that senses (and moves) the lens aperture setting is supposed to be spring loaded. Although I've checked that mechanism and it appears to be undamaged, and the spring IS there, the spring seems VERY weak. It actually barely resumes its previous position and takes seconds to do it. Actually replacing that spring would be quite the challenge in and of itself, because it's at the very bottom of the mechanism, which also controls the mirror. I can not explain why that spring is that weak. It isn't stretched out and I'm pretty sure no parts are missing or damaged. It IS connected to the appropriate parts. Everything is right but the tension.
