The masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture (2022) This is still the abbey church of Fleury (central France), of which I also posted a couple of photos in the “Post your black-and-white photos” section of the forum. In the Middle Ages, people from the outside, whether they be parishioners from the village or visitors of the abbey, gained entrance into the church via the northern portal, which was on the side of the hostelry. The monastic enclosure with the cloister was on the southern side. The northern portal is dominated by a splendid tympanum, amazingly sculpted probably during the 1100s. Traces of old polychromy are visible. This is a representation of Saint Mark in the lower left corner of the Tetramorph, with a seated Jesus partly showing to the right of the frame. The saint looks away from the Christ and towards his symbol (the lion) because, according to tradition, Mark never knew Jesus personally. The level of expertise displayed in this tympanum is stunning, especially considering the relative crudeness of the tools they had to use at the time. I wish I could upload this in a much larger size like I do on Flickr so you could see how intricate and minute all those details are. Nikon Z7 II, Sigma 135mm, ƒ/1.8 Art lens, FTZ II adapter. Gitzo tripod, Benro geared head. Natural light.
