That is very interesting that the Z7 can focus with that effective aperture being so small. There will be diffraction as there would be if that aperture was from a single 1200mm lens so images will be softer but with sharpening in post will be quite acceptable. The Z7 has the advantage of using both Phase and Contrast focusing at the same time whereas the D850 uses only one depending on VF or LV mode. I have found the Z cameras to be more reliable for focus accuracy when using the EVF than any still DSLR I have used including my D850. When I put the single point FP on an eye for example in a portrait session is 100% dead on. With the DLSRs there is always the variable of focus tuning for that FL and distance, particularly with zoom lenses where you can only fine tune for 1 focal length.
Although I am having good luck with my Z6 with focusing we are all anxious to try the new AF firmware to be released next month that has Eye-AF and optimized tracking in AF-c modes in low light.
