Photoshop and filters

For those of us old enough to remember the early days of Photoshop, it was memorable for two things: firstly it was horribly expensive and secondly it had filters. I was first introduced to it when given a pirated version of PS3 in 99 but quickly became legal when I received 5.5 bundled with a scanner.

The immediate appeal was the filters. At the time I was using a 1MP compact though for reasons of memory (16 or 64 MB Compact Flash cards I did most of my shots in 640x480 (300kp jpeg). As many of the photos of the time were total rubbish the artistic filters were a quick way of turning a disaster into a work of art: a click of a button and a two minute wait which, combined with a single Undo, often meant many long evenings to get a decent result.

These filters still exist but, in many cases, have never been upgraded, leading to virtually invisible effects in some cases and totally disastrous results in others on today's high resolution shots. The only one of the previously highly prized artistic filters worthy of its status is Poster Edges which is a quick and easy way for those wishing to do comic book style illustrations as per the example below

So should Adobe update these filters for the new generation of cameras or, as seems to be the case, just let them die an unmourned death?
