I take the photos off my camera, buy hooking the camera up to my computer and cutting and pasting them. When I do this the pic count on my camera starts over at DSC_001.jpg

How do I get the camera to keep going with the count?

There is a menu setting in the camera. I don't remember right off hand but it is in the manual. If you don't have it there is a link to it below

Go into your camera's "Custom Settings" menu (the pencil icon) then "Shooting/Display".
From there turn ON the option: "File number sequence".

That worked, thanks.

Is there a way to change the count on my camera now? Can I move my count to 250? I know I could take 250 pics and just delete them, but is there an easier way to do that, so the camera conforms to the pics on my computer, so I don't have to rename files?

You should download and familiarize yourself with the Reference Manual for your camera. Page 162 will explain in detail the file numbering sequence and matters related thereto. There are things like maximum folder size and automatic reset points you need to be aware of in addition to how to reset your file counter.

Go here and download the Reference Manual (not the User's Manual): D5100 Reference Manual

You could just rename batches you take off the card in plain old Windows... Select all, rename, day1-1/whatever name you want and proceed hassle free.

Been doing this forever. Each set of pics go into their own folder ie "Grand Canyon" then With Windows, I select all, right click on the first pic, select rename .Give the same name as the folder ie GrabdCanyon.jpg. Press enter. Windows auto numbers all the pics. Really keeps them organized.
