Photo Filing System

I can see how quickly photos can pile up and was wondering if anyone has a useful filing system/method they use so that photos can be located easily and quickly.

I would think that over a time similar subjects in different lighting conditions/locations etc will be taken. How to distinguish and find quickly could be a big problem with a haphazard system.

Organized into folders by year on external hard drive. Imported to Lightroom. Works wonders. Gotta keep them semi organized in folders. Years works for me, but some might have to do months.

Lightroom here too. I'm still learning, but I try to tag everything with multiple keywords. It goes quickly. Special occasions go into their own folder too. You can filter by camera and lens and other parameters which is helpful when you are testing, experimenting and learning.

Very interesting thanks Nick and everyone who responded. Much appreciated.

My problem is making my photos available for the non photo literate in the house. My wife wants to be able just add pictures to Facebook without learning Lightroom.

My wife too..... Did you download those pictures yet? How are those pictures coming? Did you download those pictures yet? Do you think you will have them tonight? Don't forget to send me those pictures. Did you download them yet?

So I'll just quickly export her a batch of email-sized jpgs with camera vivid applied and she is happy.
