Packing camera for travel

I've just started packing for my holiday/vacation.

The trip involves a short 40 minute flight, then a car rental. I have one check-in bag & one carry-on, although as it will be a small aircraft I am likely to have to put the carry-on in the hold at the point of boarding the plane. I have a small camera bag that can carry only my camera with lens attached.

How should I pack?

I always pack my camera and lenses in my carry on.
If you don't have padded cases for all gear, get creative with clothing etc.

The short flight I just had still allowed you to take your carry on on board. I had packed my camera in its bag, in a rucksack with a small amount of extra padding. The carryon went under the seat in front of me.
I hope this is the case for you too!

Thanks for your replies. I think we have a result!

I've just been doing a test pack & my camera bag full of gear fits inside my carry-on. The small aircraft has no overhead lockers, so carry-ons are not likely to be allowed in the cabin. However what I can do is after check-in, I can remove the camera bag from the carry-on, allow them to store the carry-on in the hold & take my camera bag on the flight with me as it will fit under the seat.

Camera gear is too precious and expensive and can easily be damaged. I always carry my photo gear on me and either stow it under the seat in front of me or in the overhead bin.

BTW Carguy, great avatar. Film rules supreme!
