P Mode

Hello,

I'm very new to DSLR photography. I am trying to use my Nikon D3400 in P mode. I can get the P* to show up, but as I move the dial the aperture and shutter speeds don't change. Is there a setting that I am missing? Thanks in advance!

P = the camera is using the settings it suggests.

P* = you've changed the aperture or shutter speed away from the above setting.

It could be you've changed one or the other so far there is no more adjustment. Try turning the dials the other directions.

Right, if in poor light you may be at the lenses wide open limit. Try turning the wheel the other way and it should move then.

Hi Sassy,

I don't own one, so I cannot check myself, but I took a look at the D3400 manual and could not seem to find any mention of P*. From the D5xxx series onwards, all Nikons have the Flexible Program mode where rotating a dial influences the camera's choice of speed and aperture. Does the D3400 have that at all? The answer might be 'no', though it would be strange to see a P* at all in that case.

AFAIK, every Nikon digital camera has P Mode.

Thank you all for taking the time to post! I appreciate your help. It seems when I was attempting to use P* mode I did not have enough light so I was unable to change the settings. Once I got into the daylight I was able to make changes.
