Orca watching

I'm wanting to go whale watching in Scotland next year, which lens would you suggest using as well as the shutter speed to capture photos of the whales. I own a d5100

How close do they come? Do you want up and close and personal or environmentally in your face you can see them? There are always many variables with fixed ocean spotting of whale and I would suggest 2 x zooms, one that covers the landscapes, and one that allows you a closer look into their habitat and being. Also if getting wet takes your fancy then invest in a water proof cover,

At the moment I use a D5100 with standard 18-55mm kit lens, but I'm looking to buy a telephoto lens and have a £400 budget.

70-300. Pretty good cheaper lens. Or send me a 70-200 and I'll let you have my 70-300.

Used the 70-300 while whale watching in California and it was great! It was used with a D7100. Have fun! Seeing orcas in the wild is next on my list.

on a budget the 55-200mm vr

I was able to rent a really long lens from my local dealer. It's a heck of a lot cheaper that way. In the end, after my shoot, i could have bought it....but it was well out of my budget.

You could always look into the 70-200 F4. Much cheaper than the 2.8 version. Of you could always check out the Tamron, or Sigma versions.

I am a cheap bastard. It's cheaper for me and more convinient to go to seaworld.

@28mm. However, the 55-300mm DX lens might work as well.
