Here are the changes I made, lightened up the shadows and brightened up the highlight but not to much cause I started losing detail.
I agree with both ways. For #1 bring it in tighter from the bottom, make a copies of the original and and crop it several different ways. Get in tighter on the center and see which ways work the best for you.
