No Linux tools by Nikon

Unfortunately there are no Linux tools by Nikon for its cameras, as far as I have searched.
Does anybody know the reason for this limitation?

Yet linux distributions have several applications for all cameras. Also, opensource libraries are available on the net.
I have already started to list these apps/tools/libraries and I will post them for anyone who would like to use.

It is always great to have alternatives.

Please, react so we can see, how many are interested, and how many are skeptical.

There are multiple editor for Linux, a couple off the top of my head are darktable, RawTherapee, ART and Gimp. There is even a flavor of Linux Mint that is directed at Photographers. Myself I use darktable currently 4.8.0.

Currently I am not running a Linux OS on any of my PC's, but I historically have used Ubuntu a lot. I am moving away from the Nikon NX software in recent months. I pretty much stick to open-source projects that originated in Linux repositories.

I am using DigiKam once again for importing organizing. I was using Nikon NX Studio to do this, but decided to try DigiKam again after several years away. Soon discovered it can link and export to RawTherapee and GIMP so the trial has become a switch.

RawTherapee is the heavy lifter. All my raw file editing is done there. As long as I don't need to layer work, I mostly do it with RawTherapee. It also links to export a file into GIMP for easy workflow.

GIMP is where I do have to go to work with layers. It may only be to paste in my watermark, but photos normally are finished in GIMP and exported as a JPEG.

Those are all known Linux apps that are ported to Windows and Mac. For Windows I use another open-source app called DigiCamControl. I have not seen this ported to Linux though. It is for tethered photography, and does what Nikon's NX Tether does plus a bit more. I consider it essential for deep-sky astrophotography. But it will do any of the things you would want to with tethered photography. Time-lapse, fine bulb-mode longer than 30 seconds, fine image review for focus or exposure.

It is good that some members already use linux. I am using Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 (plan to go to 24.04) in my laptop.

I also have a Raspberry Pi 5 with Ubuntu Core planning to setup a selfhosting app (like https://piwigo.org/) to save there some photos (no need to rent space in a cloud provider)
